Obviously you don't know me, but I was a pupil at THS from 1955-1962 (head girl 1962) going on to read History at university.
Given the current horrors in Ukraine, I thought you might not be aware of, but be interested to know, that one of the THS staff, back in 1956, provided a home for a young Hungarian refugee.
Miss Cotter, head of music, provided a home in 1956 for Yusvava (I'm afraid I can't remember the spelling of her name), who then came to THS and stayed.
In assembly, a day or two before Yusvava arrived, Miss Engledow (the head) told all of us, and stressed how important it was to welcome and support her.
I still have vivid memories of this kindness over sixty years ago - and, actually, find it even more moving now.
Miss Cotter was middle-aged and could appear somewhat intimidating - her kindness was therefore all the more impressive to us!. I remember her asking me during one of my piano lessons with her about youth culture and social life, specifically colours of nail varnish (which, to be honest, wasn't really massively my scene!).
I've no idea what happened to Yusvava subsequently (others probably know) - but I certainly know that she settled happily into life at school.
But Miss Cotter's kindness is something I've never forgotten. Having gone on to be a teacher myself (now long-retired, of course!), I'm even more impressed by her generosity. She'd no doubt be astonished (and embarrassed!) to know she's still remembered for it!
I just felt I should drop you a line about it, as my way of thanking her (and THS as a whole).”
With all good wishes
Anthea Turner (nee Wade) 1955-62
